Online Databases

Don't forget to go to the many online databases, which provide access to articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers. Some of these articles are provided in full-text, but others are not. The databases also act as a cumulative index to many of the journals/magazines available in the Library. COLLEGE ACCESS ONLY

  • Bartleby
This web site provides access to writings and biographical information on authors and poets from Henry Adams to William Butler Yeats. This is a commercial site, but provides free access to the public. (See also the "Contemporary Authors" database in InfoTrac.)

  • Complete Works of William Shakespeare
Although available in fulltext (HTML) versions, only the plays are available, the poetry and search features having apparently not been updated since a disk failure in November 2000.

  • Digital Text Projects by Columbia University
This site provides digital access to certain works by Aristotle, Bentham, Berkeley, Dante, Descartes, Dewey, Emerson, Hegel, Hobbes, Hume, Kant, Leibniz, Locke, Machiavelli, Mill, Plato, Rousseau, Socrates, Spinoza, and Vergil.

  • Milton Reading Room
Electronic texts of some of Milton's original works and a bibliography of recent criticism are provided at this site, created and maintained by an associate professor of English at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH.

  • Renascence Editions
This site provides a repository of works printed between 1477 and 1700, though they are not necessarily "scholarly" editions; provided by the editors and the University of Oregon in Eugene.

  • Representative Poetry Online
A collection of 1600 poems by 266 poets from the middle ages to the beginning of the 20th century, this site is published by the Department of English at the University of Toronto.  Searches can be performed by a poet's name, or by a poem's title, first line, or last line.

  • Victorian Women Writers Project
Anthologies, novels, political pamphlets, religious tracts, children's books, and poetry written by British women writers of the 19th century can be found at this site. To gain access to the works - not just the list of works - click on "Proceed to Victorian Women Writers Collection." At the following page you will select the method of access (HTML for a web browser) and/or method of download.  The site is presented by the Library at Indiana University.
