Online Databases

Don't forget to go to the many online databases, which provide access to articles from journals, magazines, and newspapers. Some of these articles are provided in full-text, but others are not.   • Canada's Digital Collection
    This web site provides links to over 400 web resources covering Canada's history, geography, science, technology and culture.

  • Discoverers Web
    This site provides links to information about explorers and their expeditions from around the world. It looks very plain (text only), but the resources are extensive.

  • Geography Network
    The Geography Network is a global effort by government and commercial data providers who are committed to making geographic content easily accessible.

  • Geography on About.com
    About.com is a well-known online directory.  This page points the user to web sites about geography.

  • Geosource
    A directory of more than 4,500 web resources covering human geography, physical geography, geoscience, and environmental science, this page is maintained by the subject librarian for Geography, Cartography, Planning and Environmental Science at the Uithof Library Centre of the Utrecht University Library in the Netherlands.

  • GIS Dictionary
    This is an on-line dictionary of over 980 GIS (Geographical Information System) terms. The site is presented by the Association for Geographic Information and the University of Edinburgh's department of geography.

  • The Library of Congress: Country Studies
    A continuing series of on-line books, previously published by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army, is available here. This series contains studies of 101 countries and regions. You can search across all countries or any combination of countries, browse the table of contents for a specific country, or simply read the full text for any of the countries listed.

  • Native Web
    This web site provides an excellent searchable directory of hundreds of links to sites about Native, Aboriginal, and Indigenous peoples across seven continents.

  • The World Wide Web Virtual Library: Geography
    Virtual Library is a web directory; this version points to resources in geography, including educational links.
